A graduate colloquium on Justice in Thomistic Ethics with Dr. Thomas Hibbs. The graduate colloquia are a new initiative of the TI intended to give a selection of emerging scholars from different PhD programs an opportunity to meet and work with other younger scholars that share their interests, and to benefit from the wisdom and formation of a senior scholar.

About the Speaker:

Thomas Hibbs has been President of the University of Dallas since 2019. Previously, he served as distinguished Professor of Ethics & Culture and Dean of the Honors College at Baylor University. He is the author of books including Virtue's Splendor: Wisdom, Prudence, and the Human Good and Shows About Nothing, one of two books of his about film. His two most recent books are Wagering on an Ironic God: Pascal on Faith and Philosophy and Laudato Si: Nihilism, Beauty, and God (forthcoming, University of Notre Dame Press). He also has written on film, culture, books and higher education in publications including Books and Culture, Christianity Today, First Things, and The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Successful applicants will receive a full tuition scholarship and room and board for the duration of the conference.  A limited number of travel scholarships are also available; preference will be given to those accepted students who do not have access to institutional funding for travel.

Summer Theology Program - St. Thomas on Galatians - to be put on by the Albertus Magnus Center

August 12 - 16; Wausau, WI

The Albert the Great Center is expanding its offerings by holding a summer theology program in the USA for the first time in collaboration with The Aquinas Institute for the Study of Sacred Doctrine. The primary focus of this week-long intensive course will be the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians, supported by St. Thomas Aquinas' commentary on the same epistle.

The daily academic schedule will include both lectures and discussion-style seminars. The seminars focus on a detailed reading of the great texts of the theological tradition, the aim of which is to arrive at a deeper knowledge of truth through a collaborative work of reasoned dialogue. The lectures provide an opportunity for certain topics that arise out of the reading to be explored in greater depth. One of the highlights of the course is the formal scholastic disputation to be held on Thursday, August 15, in honor of the solemn feast of Our Lady's Assumption.

In addition to the academic program, there will also be ample opportunity to participate in the rich liturgical life of St. Mary's Oratory with the canons of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. Daily Mass and prayers of the divine office will be available in the usus antiquior('extraordinary form') of the Roman Rite, as well as the sacrament of confession. 

Faculty for the program will be Fr. Thomas Crean, O.P., Dr. John Joy, Dr. Alan Fimister, and Dr. Taylor Patrick O’Neill.

New Book: General Principles of Sacramental Theology

Roger W. Nutt has released a new book with The Catholic University of America Press entitled General Principles of Sacramental Theology.

General Principles of Sacramental Theology addresses a current lacuna in English-language theological literature. Bernard Leeming's highly respected book Principles of Sacramental Theology was published more than sixty years ago. Since that time, there has been a noted decrease, especially in English-language sacramental theology, in treatments of the basic topics and principles—such as the nature of the sacraments of signs, sacramental grace, sacramental character, sacramental causality, sacramental intention, the necessity and number of the sacraments, sacramental matter and form, inter alia—which apply to all of the sacraments.

Rather than deconstruct the Church's tradition, as many recent books on the sacraments do, Roger Nutt offers a vibrant presentation of these principles as a sound foundation for a renewed appreciation of each of the seven sacraments in the Christian life as the divinely willed means of communion and friendship between God and humanity. The sacraments bestow and nourish the personal communion with Jesus Christ that is the true source of human happiness. "There is perhaps no aspect of traditional Thomistic thought so contested in modern Catholic theology as the notion of predestination as presented by the classical Thomist school. What is that doctrine, and why is it so controversial? Has it been rightly understood in the context of modern debates? At the same time, the Church's traditional affirmation of a mystery of predestination is largely ignored in modern Catholic theology more generally. Why is this the case? Can a theology that emphasizes the Augustinian notion of the primacy of salvation by grace alone also forego a theology of predestination?
